Maybe whoever coined the phrase “Everything but the kitchen sink” was referring to some sink made out of fireclay. The heavy-duty material, created when clay is heated and treated at upward of 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, is so thick, in fact, that oftentimes an expert installer must alter the surrounding counter and cupboards to encourage its huge weight.
This usually means that the nonporous material, in addition to being readily cleanable, is almost impossible to scratch, dent or crack, making it good for sinks that see a lot of rough action. So feel free to load it up with metal baskets, aluminum pans, thick glasses, metal jars — basically everything but the … well, you get the idea.
